Learn All You Need To Know About Microplastics In Your Drinking Water

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ve probably seen some information about widespread pollution due to plastic use.
Many organizations and individuals are calling for decreased use of plastics… or even a complete switch to other materials. Recycling and reusing are also hot topics of conversation.
So you’ve heard about plastic… but what about microplastics? (Yeah, I hadn’t heard of them either until just a week or two ago.)
A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that microplastics are found in almost everything in our environment. And perhaps most worryingly, they found microplastics in our water.
SPECIAL: What’s REALLY Causing Your Weight Gain, High Blood Pressure & Constant Fatigue (If You’re Over 30 You Need to See This)…Yes, YOUR water. Your drinking water… your wastewater… and pretty much all water sources. That includes fresh water AND marine water.
Microplastics were also found in food and in the air. There’s really no escaping them.
And getting back to your drinking water for a minute… the WHO reports that microplastics have been found in both tap water and bottled water. So don’t think you can avoid them by avoiding plastic bottles or by installing a filter on your tap.
Before you completely panic about this new report, let’s review some basic info about microplastics and whether they’re harmful. Then, if you do panic, at least it will be a well-informed panic. 😉

What Are Microplastics & Where Do They Come From?
Microplastics don’t have a specific, scientific definition. They typically are defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in length.
Because the definition of microplastics is fairly vague, they encompass a lot of different sizes, shapes, and types of particles.

Regardless of how microplastics get there, the World Health Organization reports that they are ubiquitous in the environment.
To give you some peace of mind… a large percentage of microplastics can be cleaned out of water by many treatment facilities that are currently used to clean and treat water. So you don’t really need to be worried about a 5 mm piece of plastic showing up in your bottled or tap water.
Current water treatment and filtration techniques can clean many more types and sizes of other particles and microbes out of drinking water. In theory, this should work for cleaning out microplastics as well.
However, this is not a perfect solution. The WHO reports that approximately 90% of microplastics are cleaned out of water using these techniques. While that’s a great start… that still leaves about 10% in your water.

Are Microplastics Harmful?
Of course you want to know whether these microplastics are dangerous. The WHO report basically said no.
According to the report, no research has shown that microplastics are harmful to human health. The World Health Organization also stated that they believed other types of water contamination to be more dangerous to humans than microplastics.

HOWEVER, the fact that there is no research showing harmful effects of microplastics on humans isn’t conclusive. In actuality, this is because very few studies have been conducted on the subject of how microplastics affect human health.

Should You Be Worried About Microplastics In Your Drinking Water?
The truth is that we don’t really know yet. We don’t know how microplastics will affect human health. Further research needs to be done before we will know.
Be sure to watch for more information about microplastics in the coming months and years. I’ll be sure to update this article as new information and research become available.
So what can you do in the meantime? If you live in a first-world country, your water is likely treated, cleaned, and filtered already. You have a low risk for ingesting a high amount of microplastics.
SPECIAL: New Research Reveals How to Get Your Brain to Tell Your Body to Burn More FatHowever, you can take steps to reduce your own plastic use. This will help prevent more plastic from being put into the environment… which can hopefully prevent the microplastic pollutant levels from continuing to grow.
Get a reusable water bottle instead of the disposable kind. Avoid using plastic utensils and straws. Use a reusable grocery bag instead of plastic ones.
If we all take small steps, we can lower the amount of plastic that’s put into the environment.

So What’s Our Best Hope To Fight Microplastics (And Other Harmful Pollutants)?
Bacteria.
Yup. Those tiny, microscopic organisms are found everywhere, all over the planet… including inside your digestive system.
(Which, as I’ll explain in a moment, is actually a GOOD thing!)
Science is just beginning to understand how the bacteria inside of us may do all sorts of things to break down complex molecules like plastic.
For example, did you know that scientists in Japan have created “mutant” bacteria that can break down plastic bottles in landfills into harmless organic materials?
It’s true… and some of the same science can be used inside of you to break down fat and other toxins into useable energy.
For example, scientists have recently discovered which strains of bacteria in your gut contribute to weight gain… and more importantly, weight LOSS…
And brand-new research has identified 4 strains in particular that can:
- support healthy digestion…
- may boost your metabolism…
- and can increase fat burn…
… if you have them in the right quantities.
(I was pretty shocked to read that one of the reasons “naturally thin” people are able to stay thin… while eating just about anything they want… is because they have WAY more of these 4 strains in their bodies than the rest of us!)
Now, these 4 strains are found in many healthy “probiotic” foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut…
… though much to my dismay, after doing the math I realized you’d have to eat two GALLONS of Greek yogurt every day just to get enough to boost your metabolism.
However, a famous TV doctor wanted to find a way for anybody to get these “fat-burning” strains…
Without shoving fistfuls of fermented cabbage down your throat for days on end…
Or getting some kind of “poop transplant” from a naturally skinny person (people seriously do this, Google it!!)…
