Have you ever heard of the saying, “If something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is?”

Welcome to the stage: negative-calorie foods!

Unfortunately, negative-calorie foods are a perfect example of something that is too good to be true. What is this fantasy, exactly?

Negative-calorie foods are straight out of one of those dreams that you never want to wake up from. It’s essentially a food that takes more calories to digest than they actually contain.

If it were true, negative-calorie foods would be perfect for dieters. After all, wouldn’t you love to burn calories just by eating?

New Research Debunks the Myth of Negative-Calorie Foods

A lot of nutritionists and doctors have been skeptical of this idea. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has even said that foods like celery and lettuce still count towards a day’s calories, even though they don’t contain that many calories.

Some studies have gone a step further and tested the theory. One study found that even eating only celery provided lizards with more energy than it took to eat and process the food.

The researchers said it can be assumed that the results would be similar in humans.

So, let’s get this myth out of our heads. It’s safe to say that negative-calories foods probably don’t exist.

Sure, celery, lettuce, cucumbers, and the like are good for you and contain few calories. However, they most likely don’t contain so few calories that it would end up being a negative balance after digestion.

Don’t worry! These “negative-calorie” foods are still really good for weight loss, so don’t go through your kitchen and throw anything out just yet.

The issue with foods like celery and lettuce is that they simply aren’t very filling. If I sat down and ate some celery, I think I would be hungry about 10 minutes later.

News flash: it is not healthy to be hungry all of the time!

What to Eat for Lasting Weight Loss – Instead of Mythical “Negative-Calorie” Foods

Here are some great foods that are weight-loss friendly but more filling:

1)   Whole eggs

Eggs are back! People used to shy away from eggs because they thought that they were high in cholesterol. However, they are a great food to eat if you are trying to lose weight.

BRAND-NEW: 5 “Living Nutrients” That Can Trigger Rapid Fat Loss!

Eggs are high in protein and fat, and more importantly, they are super filling. This study showed that eating eggs for breakfast increased feelings of fullness and resulted in participants eating less for the next 36 hours!

I’ll take that over a stick of celery any day.

2)   Salmon

One of my all-time favorite meals is salmon. How can you not love it?

One of my favorite things about salmon is that it’s not super fishy taste-wise, so even if you aren’t a huge seafood fan, try a bit of salmon! You’ll be surprised.

Even more surprising is that salmon is super healthy and even more satisfying – you’ll be full for hours and not intake a lot of calories. It’s also loaded with healthy fats, nutrients, and more.

I call that a win!

3)   Grapefruit

Another personal favorite, grapefruit has been studied in direct correlation with weight loss. A 12-week study found that eating a fresh grapefruit before meals leads to a weight loss of around 3.5 pounds.

That’s pretty good for just being one little fruit!

If you eat grapefruit about a half an hour before some of your daily meals, it can help you feel more satisfied and you may eat less calories. Go buy some grapefruit!

4)   Yogurt

Okay, I know I’ve said this about the last two, but yogurt is also towards the top of my list!

One of the main drivers of obesity is not having a healthy gut. Certain yogurts contain probiotic bacteria that improve your gut.

Therefore, chowing down on something like full-fat yogurt can help you lose weight by improving your gut bacteria. It’s important to pick yogurt that has live cultures, because the other kinds don’t contain probiotics.

Also, I’d suggest full-fat yogurt, because studies have shown that it can lower the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes over time. Also, low-fat yogurt can contain a lot of sugar – not the best for trying to lose weight!

Real Weight Loss Results Through Better Food Choices

Overall, it’s pretty clear that we have to eat. If you think about it, “negative-calorie” foods not only don’t make much sense, but even if they were real, they don’t sound very healthy!

What’s the point in eating something like celery or a cucumber if you are going to spend your whole day hungry and miserable? Personally, I get very cranky when I’m hungry.

It’s probably better for everyone to give your body healthy, filling alternatives.
