There’s been a lot of news lately about how eating meat affects your health.
It’s like the experts can’t agree. Is red meat actually bad for you? Does chicken affect your heart health just as much as red meat? There seems to be some conflicting research out there…
But there’s at least one thing it seems like scientists and doctors can agree upon: a plant-based diet is good for you.
Over the years, more and more studies have come out proving the health benefits of choosing a plant-based – or vegan – diet. According to research, plant-based eating is good for your heart… and pretty much all of you!
So it really wasn’t surprising to me when I came across a new study that shows yet another benefit of a plant-based diet. When I started reading through it… while I still wasn’t really *surprised* to learn about these benefits… I was certainly excited about them!
That’s because this new research shows that eating a vegan diet is really good for your gut health.TRENDING: Science Reveals Easy, No-Workout Ways to Lose Weight… While You Snooze!
Your gut health includes the balance of bacteria that live in your gut. That’s right – these bacteria live in your gut!
But don’t worry, because that’s a good thing. Or at least, it’s a good thing when the good bacteria outnumber the bad bacteria.
When you have lots of good bacteria in your gut, your body functions properly. With a healthy microbiome, you’re more likely to have a strong immune system, a properly functioning digestive system, healthy skin, and so much more.
When your microbiome is thrown out of balance, however, you see negative effects. This could be skin issues like acne… weight gain… depression… digestive problems like IBS… and the list goes on and on.
So when research finds something new that can boost your gut health, I’m certainly willing to look into it!
How A Vegan Diet Boosts Your Gut Health
The study that found how a plant-based diet benefits your gut was conducted over a period of 16 weeks. During this time, one group of study participants ate a low-fat vegan diet. The other group ate their normal diet with no changes.BRAND-NEW: 5 “Living Nutrients” That Can Trigger Rapid Fat Loss!
At the end of the 16-week period, the group who ate a vegan diet were found to have higher levels of beneficial bacteria in their systems. Specifically, a strain called Faecalibacterium prausnitzii increased by 4.8%. Another strain, called Bacteoides fragilis, increased by a whopping 19.5%!
The researchers noted that the vegan diet led to an increased content of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. These particular bacteria feed on fiber… and if you’re eating a plant-based diet, you’re likely to have plenty of good plant fiber in your system!
When these bacteria feed on fiber, as well as sugars and starches found in plants, they produce short-chain fatty acids. These compounds were then found to lead to great effects for your body… including lower body weight and greater insulin sensitivity.
How A Vegan Diet Helps You Lose Weight
Yes, you read that right! Those good bacteria that love a vegan diet can help you lose weight.
Those good bacteria I mentioned… the ones that increased in the people who ate a vegan diet in the study… are actually really important for weight loss and fat burn.
F. prausnitzii is associated with decreases in body weight, fat mass, and visceral fat. B. fragilis is also linked to decreases in body weight, fat mass, and visceral fat, as well as increases in insulin sensitivity.BRAND NEW: These Delicious Desserts Can Help You Burn Fat & Lose Weight

How To Get Started On A Vegan Diet
Alright, so it’s obvious that going vegan can have huge benefits for your gut health AND your waistline. But how do you get started… especially if you’re a bit nervous about going meat-free?
First, it’s important to note that not EVERY vegan diet will support your microbiome and lead to weight loss. After all, not all vegan foods are healthy!
In the study, the participants ate a low-fat vegan diet. So you have to watch your fat intake if you want to see similar results.
Here are a few tips for getting started on a plant-based diet:
1) Eat a variety of foods.
It’s easy to get pigeon-holed if you aren’t familiar with vegan eating. Don’t forget that lots of foods are vegan!
So don’t think all you can eat is broccoli with a side of spinach. Think of all of the foods you CAN eat… like nuts and nut butters, whole grains and cereals, seeds, plant-based proteins, plant milks and yogurts, legumes, fermented plant foods… and of course, fruits and vegetables.

2) Try more plant-based proteins.
While you can get a lot of protein from beans and vegetables like spinach, you’ll probably want to try some other plant-based proteins as well.
Never tried tofu or tempeh? Now’s the time!
3) Don’t make the shift all at once if you don’t want to.
Don’t go cold-turkey on animal products if you don’t want to. There’s no trophy waiting for you if you go all-vegan faster!
Ease into a vegan diet by slowing phasing out animal products from your diet. Maybe you’ll cut out beef this week, chicken the next, and eggs the next. Go at a pace that fits your life.
Before you know it, you’ll be eating a plant-based diet and gaining all of its benefits!
